5 Common Branding Mistakes to Avoid

Are you just starting out as an entrepreneur?
Learn from some common mistakes that most brands make and ace ahead in your new business.

It’s true that we learn from the mistakes we make.

But we also learn from other’s mistakes. And when it comes to the beauty, wellness and lifestyle industries, second chances are hard to come by. With the cut-throat competition out there, it is best to avoid some common missteps and make every post count.

Here’s what we here at The Brand Method believe are some of the most common mistakes new businesses make and how you can avoid falling into the same trap.

Picking quantity over quality

Giving your audience quality content once a day is better than giving them several irrelevant posts that don’t align with your brand identity. This will keep your followers or fan base hungry for new content and they will look forward to when you post. Remember – quality over quantity!

Copying from competitors

Another common mistake new businesses often make is copying content or strategy from their competitors.

But that content is already out there for the public to see. In order to build your brand, you need to come up with things that are new, exciting and originally you - facts that define your brand.

Don’t go down the copycat ladder, as it will make your content redundant and bore your followers or fans. Feel free to take inspiration from your favourite brands and content creators, but try to keep things new, fresh, and exciting and most importantly about you.

Not being CONSISTENT

Every channel and platform matters, because your audience might be looking for more than just updates and tips. While updating and keeping your Instagram and Facebook account fresh is a critical step, don't forget your website as well.

Keep your blog and website updated, and if you have a YouTube channel, make sure you post regular videos and engage with your followers there too.

Ignoring SEO

SEO is your best friend, no questions asked. Even though social media is huge, a lot of people still use good ol' Google search and reviews to find services and businesses. A common mistake most content creators make is not researching top keywords that are relevant to their brand, making their posts and website rank higher for the people that are already searching for them.

Remember - the higher your business ranks on google search, the more chances your website and social media pages will gain traffic (and customers!!!!).

Using too many technical terms (aka JARGON!)

Using language that is easily understood by all readers is an essential requirement. If you use too many technical terms, you might come across as someone who knows the tricks of the trade, but chances are your readers will not be able to understand what you are trying to say.

Our advice is to keep it simple and strike a balance.

For example, if you’re in the skincare industry you might often use 'dermatological' language, but also share tips, advice and educate in a way that everyone can benefit from it without feeling lost or even worse…bored.

Think about the words that your clients are using to describe the problem they’re experiencing when they first come to you. What questions are they asking?

Hot tip:
Keep a notebook, or note on your phone, of the key phrases that pop up in your initial consults, discovery calls and email enquiries and weave these through your brand copy - on your website, through socials and anywhere else you’re communicating your brands message. These are GOLDEN!

That’s it for today, guys. Avoiding these simple mistakes can help your business bloom with raving fans and followers in no time.
